What is centering in machining process?

How do you find the center when CNC machining - LinkedIn

The centering is to find the zero point of the workpiece to be processed. If the centering is not standardized, it will lead to errors in processing and even the workpiece will be scrapped. Therefore, mastering the centering skills is an essential skill for every CNC operator. At present, the commonly used centring tools include dialgauge (dial indicator), centring rod (edge finder) and machine tool probe.

  • By using dialgauge (dial indicator)

Find the centre by dialgauge(dial indicator) would need manual operation, which has high requirements for personnel. Due to the long operation time, and possible human error, this method has been gradually phased out, mainly used by some self-employed or processing plants with low accuracy requirements.

  • By using centring rod(Edge finder)

The centring rod (edge finder) must be rotated when centring, and it needs to be judged by the human eye whether it touches the workpiece. The resolution of the human eye varies from person to person, and it is easy to cause the visual fatigue.

Therefore, the accuracy is very limited, this method is suitable for the workpiece which has few requirements on precision.  Also it can not measure the hole which diameter is less than 10mm.

By using the machine tool probe

After the machine tool probe is installed, use the probe to touch each side of the workpiece in turn (manual or program control), and record the machine tool coordinates of the current point, calculate the center of the workpiece, and ensure the centering accuracy, thereby improving the machining accuracy.

In the use of machine tool probes, it completely gets rid of the limitations of the operator's technical level. It transforms the operation that originally required experience and handfeel in the correction and processing process into a scientific, simple, and everyone-can-master process. Therefore, the use of machine tools Probes are becoming the mainstream of CNC machining at present.

The machine tool probe has a repeatability of up to 1um, can measure holes with a diameter of more than 2mm. The stylus can be replaced, the stylus ball and length can be selected according to user requirements to fit different applications.

Facing and Centering Machine Process Description

What does it do? How can I use it? Why will it help me?

A facing and centering machine is a turning machine that can machine both ends of a piece of bar stock simultaneously. While it may be called a facing and centering machine, it can also chamfer, bore, countersink, and turn. For the most part, facing and centering machines are used to prepare bar stock for further machining on a primary operation lathe.

Normally, an operator would need to machine one end of a part, remove the part, and then machine the other end. By machining both ends of the bar at the same time, turning time is cut in half. But in addition, by properly preparing the faces of the workpiece prior to turning, a facing and centering machine can often entirely eliminate later finishing operations. The machine’s centering operation (creating an accurately positioned hole for further drilling or working) can also remove the need for machining some parts of the outside diameter of the workpiece later on. 1
Any operation that manufactures shafts, splines, trunions, and similar pieces will find use for a facing and centering machine. The automotive and driveshaft industry is perhaps the most prominent.

Process Description: How does it work?

Facing and centering machines come in several different sizes, and the operator can turn a wheel to adjust both ends of the work envelope to fit the piece being worked. The machinist places the bar stock into two self-centering vises mounted on ways that can be moved horizontally. These vises replace the collets or chucks on other turning machines, as there are spindles at both ends of the workpiece.

The spindles themselves move hydraulically toward the part, and usually several machining operations can be performed on a single spindle. Cycle times are fairly short, and when the cycle is completed the spindles move out again and the vises release the part.
