Pipe Heat Treatment

Heat treatment of pipes is a process used to alter the physical and mechanical properties of metallic pipes through controlled heating and cooling. This treatment can help improve the pipe's hardness, strength, toughness, and other characteristics to meet specific requirements for various applications. The most common heat treatment processes for pipes are annealing, normalizing, quenching, tempering, and stress relieving.

What is pipe heat treatment?

All welding involves a modification of the structure of the metals concerned, and thus an alteration of their mechanical characteristics. Heat treatment is then used to reinforce the welds, so that the finished structure has optimum strength.

The exact term is TTD: Thermal Treatment of Detensioning. The area where the welding has been done is heated to a given temperature for a given time. This allows for the release of welding stresses in order to obtain the appropriate mechanical characteristics for the part.

The applied treatment generates metallurgical changes within the crystal structure of the materials and compensates for the damage caused during welding. The joints of the pipe become more stable, which prevents cracking when they go to work.

Which welding jobs require heat treatment?

Heat treating is involved in most welding jobs in industry:

Industrial repairs in electric, hydraulic and nuclear power plants;

Railroad repairs

Chemical or steel plants

Oil refineries

Boiler plants

Manufacture of metallurgical components

Military sector

Aviation, automotive, petrochemical industries, etc.

How does heat treatment work?

Heat treatment is divided into three steps to ensure the integrity of the pipe welding work.

Gradual temperature increase, the rate of which is determined upstream and depends on the type of structure in question.

Maintaining the temperature, which can remain stable or have several levels.

The cooling rate is also calculated according to the work performed.

The characteristics of each process are determined by the quality of the steel and the thickness of the tube.

Two types of heat treatment

There are two types of heat treatment: one in which the entire part is placed in an oven, and the other in which the heat treatment is localized and is applied only to the part to be welded. In this case, either resistance heating or induction heating can be used.

To use an oven, the dimensions of the structure must permit it. This is the case, for example, with certain pipes, tanks, tank covers, steam generators and supercharger assemblies.

Localized Heat Treatment Equipment

There are several types of heat treating equipment available to meet all requirements. The following are the main ones.

Medium Frequency Induction Equipment

Medium frequency induction equipment is designed for large pipes and lines. They can be combined with water cooling systems if required.

Low Pressure Equipment

Low-voltage devices use infrared radiation panels or ceramic resistors for preheating. They have the advantage of being programmable, allowing automated processes without the need for an operator to be present at all times. In addition, they are very practical and can be used both in the workshop and directly outside on construction sites.

Joule effect U-shaped heat treatment plant

This heat treatment plant is specially designed for steel tubes. It heats the tubes by means of a low-frequency high current, utilizing the Joule effect to reach temperatures higher than ° in a few seconds.

TY Induction has sold a number of wide induction heating systems or equipment for pipe and tube production worldwide. With a rich of experience, TY Induction assists you in your tube and pipe heating and manufacturing requirements. If you are thinking of induction heating for your tube and pipe production, think of TY Induction. We look forward to working with you.

Why do tube and pipe need heat treatment?

l  Improve the material mechanical properties of steel pipes and precision steel pipes

l  Relieve residual stress and improve machinability of steel pipe metal

l  Improve the quality of seamless steel pipes

l  Meet different clients' requirements

l  Suitable for high-grade steel applications

l  Extend the service life of steel pipes

l  Increase product competitiveness

Induction heating is an ideal heating method for tube and pipe heat treatment.  more and more manufacturers prefer to induction heating for their tube and pipe production because of its characters of fast heating speed, high energy efficiency, precise temperature control and uniform temperature distribution in ID/OD and lateral/longitudinal.

Help for people buying the "12-48 Volt / Watt ...

More recently, an improved version has become available and is being sold by well over a dozen vendors.  Instead of one pair of IRFP260N's driving the coil, they doubled up on them and added 2 fans on top.  The also added 50% more capacitance to the  tank circuit and increased the number of turns of the output coil from 7 to 10.  These tank changes should lower the oscillation frequency which is good for many things that people would want to heat.

Just recently, I ordered one of them, a complete kit, called "Combo 2" by seller Aliexpress.
I had to wait quite a while for an analog ammeter and it's here now.  I still haven't connected it all up yet, but I have spent a lot of time unraveling the various  descriptions and pseudo instructions that I see on the vendor offerings.  These units are seldom soldi n as complete a kit form as the one the I got from Aliexpress.
Some vendors call them watt, some even call them watt, but I'm pretty sure they are all the same.
Yesterday I put up a new web page to help new buyers understand what they just bought and how to set it up with a minimum of disappointment.
I tell you all this, because I'd like to get this link to others, since I am already getting inquiries anyway.
There are two web pages referenced here on this cover page:
 https://spaco.org/Blacksmithing/ZVSInductionHeater/ZVSWatt/-WattZVSInductionHeaterNotes.htm

Both pages are pretty messy, but, due to the apparent popularity of these devices, I wanted to get something out there.
Time will tell.

I will add to that page and to my youtube channel once I get my system up and running.
