Onsite Oxygen Generators for Aquaculture: How It Works and the Benefits for Fish Farming

Oxygen gas is a vital part of todays fish farming industry. Typically in the aquaculture industry oxygen is supplied by an onsite oxygen generating system. Oxygen generation for fish farms helps improve the level of oxygen that fish directly absorb through the water. This supply of oxygen helps raise a variety of fish species including salmon, trout, striped bass, tilapia, and shrimp. To learn more about the role of onsite oxygen generation for fish farming and the benefits of onsite oxygen generation, heres what you need to know.

The Role of Oxygen Generators in Aquaculture

All living creatures, including those that live underwater, need oxygen to survive. In aquaculture, oxygen generators are used to diffuse dissolved oxygen (DO) into water to increase stocking density and production yields. Higher DO levels in the marine environment result in a lower mortality rate and higher food conversion rates for the aquatic creatures. DO is gaseous oxygen that is dissolved into water that fish directly absorb through their gills and skin for respiration. Maintaining optimal growth conditions can be challenging without an active onsite oxygen management and supply system.

With an onsite oxygen generator, you can inject high-purity oxygen into the raceways, ponds, or tanks that these fish and shrimp inhabit. This provides significant productivity gains and reduces the risks of mortality caused by poor water quality. A consistently high DO level is the key to achieving better results and improving bottom line profits for fish farmers. Heres how the generators work for these systems.

A side stream of water from the tank, pond, or raceway is pumped at pressure through a venturi nozzle. Oxygen from the generator is injected here. This saturates the water with oxygen which is then distributed through high velocity mixing nozzles along the bottom of the vessel. The flow of oxygen can either be manually regulated or automatically controlled using a DO analyzer and probe. The levels are regulated and controlled to ensure that a saturation of 70% or concentration of 5 or 6 parts per million (ppm) of DO is established as this is essential for stable fish growth.

Benefits of Using Onsite Oxygen Generation in Aquaculture

Simple, Dependable and Low Maintenance

With an onsite oxygen generator, you dont have to worry about any complicated procedures to get your oxygen supply. Your in-house oxygen generators will use the air in the atmosphere to get the job done. These oxygen generators can be plug and play systems that have minimal maintenance requirements that include periodic compressor maintenance and filter element changes. Downtime for maintenance is typically less than 8 hours per year.

Profitable

The return on investment for installing an onsite oxygen generator is incredible and one of the main reasons why so many companies are giving up the traditional method of outsourcing conventional oxygen supply such as cylinder gas or bulk liquid oxygen. After the initial investment, and assuming proper maintenance practices are undertaken, you will have a system that runs well for many, many years of operation. With a guaranteed oxygen supply, your company will also be able to offer higher quality fish to your customers that will sell at premium prices. Youll make your money back in no time.

Additional Advantages:

  • Increase stock density by maintaining a higher level of dissolved oxygen (DO)
  • Produce larger quantities of high-quality fish
  • Increase reproduction rates
  • Decrease mortality, disease, and stress on fish
  • Ensure the flavor of fish by providing a clean environment
  • Prevent ice from forming during winter months
  • Increase the oxygen content over a typical air-fed aerating system
  • Ensure uniform DO levels throughout tanks and ponds
  • Displace excess nitrogen
  • Improve water quality
  • Provide feed gas to an existing ozone generator for disinfection
  • Higher profits due to better weight gain and higher fish quality

Applications of Onsite Oxygen Generators in Aquaculture Fish Hatcheries

Here are some of the applications of onsite oxygen generators in the aquaculture fishing industry:

  • Broodstock units
  • Larval rearing units
  • Weaning units
  • Treatment for seawater wells
  • Biological filter of re-circulating systems
  • Ozone generation for water sterilization

Just curious to see if any of you use a pure oxygen generator to oxygenate your pond. I have read that some Japanese breeders use it to saturate their ponds with O2. I have also read of hobbyists in Malaysia and Singapore and other Asian countries using it. But to date I have not heard of any hobbyists in the States using it. Just curious is all...........:D:

Hi Lam ..:D:

The Technology is already being applied in the Aquaculture Industry
I guess it would just be a simple matter of time before this crossed over into Ponding

Hi ChiChi, I came across this website and a few others during my "googling" for more knowledge on this subject matter. This technocology is also applied to shrimping and sewer waste management as well. The pure O2 generator that was shown on the website that you linked is massive! I have seen some smaller ones that are probable more feasible for koi ponds.:D:

I have 3 units. My streams and falls keep my water 100% saturated. Most afternoons I turn off all air and falls for several hours. This is the time I feed them, watch them, take pictures of them, etc. To keep the O2 fully saturated during this time, I flip on the O2 gennys.

Hi Lam ..:D:

I do Apologise  This is all I could find - They possibly would be able to advise on suitably sized Units ..

I am using an Ogsi oxygen concentrator for my O3 system. I am currently building a saturator for the O3. When the O3 is not running it will act as an O2 saturator. On the picture the unit sits in the right lower corner.

Hi Lam-san, I heard that it is getting popular to use a pure oxygen during tosai culling among breeders in Japan because fish calm down....

Hi Stephen,

You seem to have everything that money can buy for koi keeping. What a koi keeper you are! It is very hard to find another man like you to do what you have done to the koi hobby such as building your new mud pond. It is totally amazing!!!!!!!!!!!!

Re your O2 unit, I wonder if you can provide a few more details.

1) What is the cost of the unit?
2) Where can we buy it?
3) What is the capability of the unit? Number of gallons per unit.
4) The cost of running it per month?
5) Should it be on 24/7 during the summer?

Thanks!
Derrick

1- $-$
2- Aquatic Eco-Systems or google Oxygen Generators
3- 1.1 lb/hr
4- I don't know
5- Not necessarily. The best you can do regardless of water temp is 100% saturated. After 100%, it is just wasted.

Of course I use oxygen all the time around the farm.

For my purposes it is a lot cheaper to buy welding gas (oxygen) in canisters or to fill a LOX bottle with liquid oxygen (you gortta use it though or it will evaporate on you). I've had many oxygen generators (actualy "PSA"-pressure swing adsorption units that use a minerall clay to extract nitorgen from air) over the years and found that two situations are in thier favor. If you are too far away from everyting to have welding oxygen delivered or if you don;t want to deal with the hassle of oxygen bottles.

Actually with pure oxygen (oxygen generators deliver about 90% oxygen and 10% nitrogen) you can bring saturation well above 200%. Not always good for the fish, when you put them from supersaturated to less than saturated water they get very stressed. The amount of oxygen you can dissolve into the water is dependent upon the type of device you use to dissolve it.

I've used pumps to build pressures to around 40 psi and inject oxygen into the line at 60 psi as one method (side stream injection, enchanced with static mixers). Most fish farms use a cone shaped saturator or a U-tube (put the water pipe down a 100' well and back up) that injects oxygen at the top, carries the water and oxygen down 100 feet to where the pressure is high and back up again.

I use oxygen in the sorting tank when doing sembetsu, especially in summer.

Hi Brett ..:D:

Found some related Info

Thanks for the info guys. So it looks like a backyard hobbyist might not need an oxygen generator if his/her pond is appropriately stocked and there is aeration via BDs and waterfalls.

Brett, I was kinda curious about supersaturation from oxygen generators as well. It looks like an oxygen generator is more applicable in warmer climates where oxygenation might be an issue.

Junichi-san, rumor has it that Dainichi and Omosako and Sakai Fish Farm (and I am sure a few other Japanese koi farms) are using pure oxygen generators for their nisai and older ponds as well. Do you know if this is a fact, and if so, then obviously there are benefits in using them since they are able to achieve phenomenal growth and we all know about the benefits of O2 in koi growth, water quality, and filtration function.

I do not know of any fish farms trying to oxygenate earthen ponds with oxygen generators. You'd need a humongous unit for that. Earthen ponds in Japan and elsewhere are pretty much aerated with paddlewheel aerators, which is the most effecient way to transfer oxygen to the water on a large scale. The paddlewheel aerator is the device that all others are measured against as it is the most effective means of transfering oxygen yet found.

Lam-san, I have never heard/asked about it. so, I am not sure but it would be used by SFF' factory (?) :D:.
Dainichi and Omosako maybe No.... since their all tategoi grow in mud ponds but not in concrete ponds. also, they are not so crazy to make "super sized Jumo tosai" during winter season. As you know, most of all Dainichi's main Oyagoi are easily over 90cm......94cm, 96cm, etc and Omosako main Uturi and Showa' Oyagoi are also well over 80cm.... IMO, 24/7 excesive usage of pure oxygen by a breeder' place would lead to produce a big size but a weak constitution fish...???
